Primary School Program

Life Education has been successfully supporting primary school drug and health education since 1979.

Life Education’s comprehensive programs have been specifically designed to assist schools achieve the outcomes of their state and territory curriculum. Activities are based on the Health and Physical Education outcomes. They are also designed to be integrated into additional curriculum areas, as deemed relevant by individual schools.

Primary schools play a vital role in preparing children for life and in shaping their journey through school. Research shows that the earlier we encourage children to develop positive self image, self esteem and a feeling of uniqueness, the better equipped they are to make positive healthy choices later in life.

Life Education assists student to:

  • acquire age appropriate knowledge to support informed health choices
  • develop and practice skills and strategies to act upon individual decisions
  • recognise the values and attitudes that may influence lifestyle choices and behaviours.

Our highly skilled educators, utilising their experience and training, work with schools to develop programs/sessions to support the provision of drug and health education within the school. Sessions are designed to be age specific and sequential.

Through our unique approach of engaging the community in our work we help develop connections between home and school, between families, children and their teachers.

Junior Primary School Modules

Harold’s Surprise: 1st and 2nd Years of Schooling

Harold and the class are invited to Possum's party in the park.  The class helps Harold to pack healthy picnic food and along the way we encounter various situations relating to:

  • seeking help from trusted adults
  • benefits of physical activity
  • body knowledge and self-assertion skills

Clued Up: 1st and 2nd Years of Schooling

When Cocky goes missing, Harold, with the help of the class, does some earnest detective work to find him. The components of a healthy lifestyle, including safety with medicines are examined in the search for Cocky. Others issues covered include:

  • personal safety
  • syringe safety
  • body knowledge and self-assertion skills

Harold’s Mystery Tour: 1st - 3rd Years of Schooling

Harold invites the class to attend a mystery tour in a special bus. On a humorous journey they visit a variety of places including The Full Body Experience, a beach and a waterslide. They discuss issues and engage in activities centred on:

  • the function of internal body parts e.g. heart, lungs
  • safety in public places
  • safe use and storage of medicines
  • appropriate remedies for illness
  • exploring strategies to manage feelings and emotions

Harold’s Heroes: 1st – 3rd Years of Schooling

Harold invites the class to join him and his Super-Hero Team. The team’s job is to make our environment a healthier and safer place for everyone. Class members become Super-Heroes by interacting with the A-V and suggesting solutions to the problems. The Super-Heroes fly to the rescue and facilitate the exploration of:

  • local environmental and health issues including pollution/passive smoking
  • issues around individual need for medicines and their safe use and storage
  • emergency (drug) procedures
  • safe and unsafe behaviours and environments

All Systems Go: 2nd-4th Years of schooling

Inside a futuristic machine ‘The Venture’, the Captain and his crew take the class on a tour of the human body. Travelling through the blood we explore the functions of various body parts and how magnificent the human body really is. The students discuss issues and engage in activities centred on:

 

  • Peer Pressure
  • Second hand smoking
  • Safety with medicines
  • Factors that influence the function of body systems
  • Senior Primary School Modules

    Harold’s Diary: 3rd – 5th Years of Schooling

    Harold offers to share with the class his diary entries about one week at school. This is a way of exploring relationship and friendship issues relevant to middle year students. A drama trigger video set in the school yard, vox pops of children talking about their feelings and a fun animation about food provide the stimuli for specific health/drug discussion about:

    • bullying, feelings and support networks
    • defining a drug
    • managing transitions in life and developing coping strategies
    • safety with medicines
    • healthy food choices
    • benefits of an active life-styles

    Mind Your Medicine: 4th and 5th Years of Schooling

    Using a game show format Mind Your Medicine explores issues relating to:

    • factors that can contribute to a person’s sense of self-worth
    • dimensions of health such as physical, social, emotional and environmental
    • effective communication as an essential component of maintaining positive relationships
    • medicines as drugs and the consequences of their misuse

    The Burning Issue: 6th – 8th Years of Schooling

    Through a visit to an imaginary world the students will explore content related to:

    • short and long term consequences of smoking
    • services and products that advise, educate and inform people of the facts about smoking
    • personal and community strategies to reduce the harms related to tobacco use
    • the harmful effects that smoking has on the environment
    • laws governing the advertising, sale and use of tobacco products

    Think Twice: 6th-8th Yrs of schooling

    Using a range of audio visual triggers Think Twice covers issues such as:
    • short and long term physical, social and legal consequences of alcohol use
    • campaigns and community initiatives to educate people about the harms of alcohol use
    • laws governing the advertising, sale and use of alcohol
    • myths surrounding the use of alcohol
    • personal strategies to reduce alcohol related harm

    It’s Your Call: 6th - 8th Yrs of schooling

    It’s Your Call utilises a range of trigger videos, quizzes and problem solving models to cover content such as:

    • short term and long term consequences of a range of legal drugs
    • factors that influence health and behaviour e.g. friends, media, family
    • laws relating to the sale, advertising and use of a variety of legal drugs
    • skills and strategies to deal with unsafe situations and social dilemmas
